For true blue Riordan fans, there’s no doubt that Sally Jackson, one-time lover of Poseidon, is part of the Pantheon (capital “P”) of truly great and epic characters. So much love for Sally Jackson, but I bet you didn’t know. . .
She’s the queen of blue food.
In response to her former husband Gabe’s moronic declaration that blue foods don’t exist, Sally has been known to make blue cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, and on a few occasions, even waffles and eggs. We’re salivating just thinking about them.
She can see through The Mist.
Sally is one of the few mortals on Earth who can see godly beings and monsters through the protective barrier known as The Mist. This ability led Sally to catch a glimpse of Poseidon’s trident on the beach one summer, giving her an instant conversation starter with the Greek god of the sea. Smitten by her intelligence and kindness, Poseidon still considers Sally one of his favorite mortals to this day.
She’s not a fan of air travel.
Sally avoids airplanes at all costs, mainly due to a tragic accident involving her parents when she was young. She doesn’t want Percy to travel through the air, either. It isn’t safe for him . . . the sky is Zeus’s domain. Needless to say, the waterways are way friendlier to the Jacksons, who are happy to cruise at sea level.
She took part in the Battle of Manhattan.
In The Last Olympian, the climatic finale of the Percy Jackson series, Sally gave Percy her blessing to combat Kronos, the leader of the Titans. Can you even imagine packing up your son to go compete at that level? A true Olympic moment, to which this feisty mom brought her own shotgun. Nuff said.
