When you’re a demigod, your mother could be a lonely mortal, a narcissistic goddess, or missing altogether. But come on, moms only get one day a year dedicated to them. So, to mark the occasion, let’s celebrate some of the better mothers across the Riordan books.
Athena, Mother of Annabeth Chase
Having Athena as a mom guarantees you’ll always be cared for, be at the top of the class, and receive awesome gifts like baseball hats that grant invisibility. The downside? She’s incredibly picky about her kids’ romantic partners. Ask Annabeth.
Maria di Angelo, Mother of Nico and Bianca
Maria is one of Hades’ few romantic partners who stood up to him. When the god of death wanted the di Angelos to hide from Zeus in the Underworld, Maria refused, unwilling to raise her kids in the company of ghosts and three-headed dogs. A good mother until the very end, Maria lost her life at the hands of Zeus. Maybe Hades had the right idea all along.
Aphrodite, Mother of Piper McLean
You may think she’s a superficial, self-obsessed deity, but Aphrodite truly loves her children. She went out of her way to aid Piper and friends, even helping them slay giants in The Blood of Olympus. And we imagine her fashion advice is always on point.
Natalie Chase, Mother of Magnus
Although Natalie Chase passed away two years before Magnus’s first trip to Hotel Valhalla, she’s remembered fondly by him, as well as her former partner, Frey. As an avid nature-lover, it makes sense that she would attract the god of summer. Her hikes and camping trips with Magnus have surely fueled his sense of adventure.
Demeter, Mother of Persephone, Meg McCaffrey, and Pretty Much Everyone Else
You can’t blame Demeter for not always being the best mother. Her father’s idea of parenting involved swallowing his children whole. While she’s overprotective of her immortal children, she takes a hands-off approach with demigod children like Meg McCaffrey. After what happened between Meg’s father and Nero, you can bet Meg will have choice words for Demeter when they finally meet.
