For the next round of our Greek vs Roman contest of the gods, we’re taking a look at a pair of hunter goddesses and international-scavenger-hunt champions. Strap in, pick a side, and let’s see how Artemis stacks up against her rarely-seen Roman counterpart, Diana.
What’s in a Name?
Ask anyone if they’ve ever heard of Artemis and they’ll visualize a legendary female huntress. Ask them about Diana, and they’re probably going to think of their aunt who knits them itchy sweaters for the holidays.
some lunar gods and goddesses are a little . . . well, shady.
The Greatest Girl Gang
From a young age, Artemis, daughter of Zeus, proved to be a natural leader. For centuries, she’s been the top dog in the elite Hunters of Artemis, a group of maidens who sacrifice everything else to become immortal warriors. Diana has worshippers, but she isn’t constantly surrounded by fangirls who would give anything to be part of her club. She definitely never had anyone as cool as Zoë Nightshade or Thalia Grace in her corner.
Something Wicked
Artemis may have the hunters on her side, but Diana lays claim to the witches. In fact, to this day, Wiccans still worship Diana as a symbol of powerful femininity. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned in recent years, it is to never underestimate the power of witchcraft. After all, Diana has been known to turn her opponents into animals. It brings a quick end to arguments.
It’s Just a Phase
While both Artemis and Diana are worshipped as the goddess of the moon, Diana has always been more closely associated with that giant hunk of space rock. And as much as we appreciate the moon for lighting up the night sky and controlling the tides, some lunar gods and goddesses are a little . . . well, shady. If either Artemis or Diana have been spending time with someone like, say, Khonsu, we’re going to have to deduct some points for that.
The bottom line? Diana may not show her face as often as her Greek persona, but we know she’s just as strong and capable. Yet Artemis has that sweet brand awareness, and, for us, that’s enough to push her into the winner’s circle. Also, we really don’t want her hunters to track us down.
