While the idea of living on a beautiful private island for all eternity may sound like a welcome change of pace from the daily grind, it was only a matter of time before Calypso got lonely. This exiled Titan has had many suitors over the years, but only one managed to convince her to give up her immortality and leave Ogygia for good.
Odysseus
Following the Trojan War, Odysseus had a famously long journey back home to Ithaca. After a series of toss-ups with a nasty Cyclops, a pair of sirens, and even several of his own crewmates, Odysseus was one of the first to wind up on Calypso’s island. Thanks to a curse that compelled her to fall in love with any man who washed up on her shore, Calypso bonded with the marooned king. It’s incredibly difficult to maintain a relationship with a dude with such renowned hubris, though, and after seven years, the two called it quits. Also, it didn’t help that he had a wife and kids waiting for him back home.
love will make you do crazy things. Or, more accurately, being trapped on a deserted island for centuries will make you do crazy things.
Francis Drake
Calypso’s next notable lover was the world-famous explorer/navigator, Sir Francis Drake. Hundreds of books have been written about the exploits of the first known man to captain a ship that circumnavigated the globe. Unfortunately, there is little mention of his brief tryst on Ogygia. What we do know is that he was definitely married at the time. We’re left wondering whether Calypso forcibly kicked these two-timing losers back out to sea.
Percy Jackson
At last a sea-faring hero arrived who wasn’t married with children. He was a little on the young-side, but Percy’s snark proved to be a natural fit for Calypso’s brash personality. Alas, nothing good lasts forever (the gods will see to that), and Percy eventually had to leave the island in order to save the world and reunite with Annabeth. We can’t blame Calypso for trying, but no one can come between the eternal OTP.
Leo Valdez
Calypso wasn’t able to get over Percy until another hyperactive demigod fell onto her island. Like every good partner should, Leo helped Calypso take control of her life. After being with so many mediocre dudes, she could finally put her own needs first. And, unlike the others before him, Leo actually managed to make it back to the island a second time. It’s not every day that an immortal Titan chooses to trade her powers for a quiet life among humans and demigods. But love will make you do crazy things. Or, more accurately, being trapped on a deserted island for centuries will make you do crazy things.
Who do you think is Calypso’s ultimate partner? Let us know! (Note: Any answer other than Leo will not be accepted.)
