Daughter of the Deep is finally with us! While you’re waiting for your pre-order to land on your doorstep, here’s a spotlight on the book’s hero. Enjoy!
In her first year at the special high school, Ana Dakkar has learned a lot. As prefect of the House Dolphin freshmen, she’s quickly becoming an expert in communications, exploration, cryptography, and counterintelligence. But her biggest test is rapidly approaching. And no set of flashcards or late-night cram session will be able to save her from what’s about to wash up on her shore. . . .
Family Legacy
What kind of protagonist would Ana be without a tragic backstory? Two years ago, just before she enrolled at HP, Ana’s parents died while on a mysterious scientific expedition organized by Harding-Pencroft Academy. It can be challenging to study under the very same people who sent your mom and dad to their doom, but the loss hasn’t prevented Ana from reaching the top of her class. If anything, it has made her even more determined to follow in their footsteps and fill their flippers.
At least she’s had her brother, Dev, with her at HP. He’s the Shark captain of the seniors, which makes perfect sense, as he’s always hungry, always moving, and sometimes hard to read.
Dolphin House Represent
House Dolphin is all about communication. Whether it’s obscure languages, codebreaking, or cryptography, Ana and her housemates are highly trained in the art of . . . well, talking. Added bonus: they can also commune with aquatic life. More specifically in Ana’s case, with an adorable yet-tough-as nails dolphin bestie named Socrates. Bet you wish your school mascot wasn’t just a dude in a rubber costume.
Prefect Score
Ana’s roommates and closest friends are Nelinha da Silva and Ester Harding, representatives of House Cephalopod and House Orca respectively. The trio has been through a lot together over the past year, and every prefect worth their salt knows that Houses benefit from unity, not division. Even if means working with House Shark and their prefect, Gemini Twain (who is a total jerk, by the way).
The Mystery of Her History
If the surname Dakkar sounds familiar to you, congratulations! You’re a science fiction nerd! As far as Ana is concerned, though, it’s a mere coincidence that she shares a name with the man who went by the alias Captain Nemo as he stalked enemies in a high-tech submarine. Yeah, just like the names Harding and Pencroft are coincidences as well.
Come on, Ana. You can decode encrypted messages in whale songs, but you can’t recognize this pattern right before your eyes?
What are they teaching at this school, anyway?
