If you’re like us, you’ve already watched the Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser trailer released at D23 over a dozen times. If not more.
Because so much of the upcoming Disney Plus series is still being kept under wraps (like who’s playing Poseidon? Zeus? Athena? Hades?!), we decided to pick out some of our favorite details from this minute-long teaser in a futile attempt to satisfy our appetite for more footage.
1. The Narration
Even the most casual Percy Jackson fans were able to identify the narration of this teaser as the opening lines of The Lightning Thief. This commitment to the source material from the start is a very good sign. And we have to admit that even though we’re already very familiar with the story, Walker Scobell’s delivery was so good, it left us asking “What happens next?!”
2. The Camp
We loved how authentic and lived-in Camp Half-Blood looked in this teaser. From the rustic cabins, to the Greek columns, to the looming oak trees, this is how we always imagined CHB. And, judging from the signpost, we have many more cool sites to look forward to.
3. And the Campers
It’s not easy to make a group of young teenagers look intimidating. But we have to confess that after seeing those shots of the cool, composed, and heavily-armed demigods . . . Well, let’s just say that if we ever came across those kids in the woods, we’d be turning back and rescheduling our camping trip for a later date. A much later date.
4. The Shirts!
Let’s talk about clothes for a second. The iconic Camp Half-Blood T-shirt has never looked better—the orange really popped against the muted palette of the teaser. This particular color is notoriously hard to pull off in the fashion world, but don’t be surprised if you see a lot more of it as we get closer to the release date of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
5. The Atmosphere
We love the humor, whimsy, and snark in Rick’s series. We also love how dark, dramatic, and downright scary his books can sometimes be. We have no doubt that the Disney+ series will effortlessly blend the light and dark aspects of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but this teaser trailer definitely leaned more into the ominous sense of dread vibe. And we ate it up.
Let’s face it: Percy’s story is pretty harrowing. A serious approach is necessary to draw viewers of all ages into to this world, and we applaud the show’s creative team for committing to a more somber tone. At least in this minute-long teaser.
