Valentine’s Day is far behind us at this point, but if there’s one couple who don’t mind their spotlight coming late, it’s Magnus Chase and Alex Fierro. After all, how many people can say they found the love of their life after their life officially ended?
Magnus and Alex’s journey is a bit truncated compared to other OTPs, such as Percabeth and Solangelo, as the two einherjar only really appeared together in The Hammer of Thor and The Ship of the Dead. That said, the road to their relationship took a lot of twists and turns in a relatively short amount of time, resulting in a fan-favorite pairing that many readers are still begging to see more of.
Discover (or rediscover) the full story by picking up the best-selling Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard trilogy. Until then, here are all the highlights you need to know about Fierrochase:
From Enemies to Frenemies
Raise your hand if you could have guessed that these two were going to get together based on Alex’s first entrance in the The Hammer of Thor. Poor Magnus was only just finding his footing as an einherji and adjusting to (after)life in Hotel Valhalla when Alex stormed into his life, transformed into a cheetah, and ran right over his feet. On top of that, there was Alex’s shady reputation among Magnus’s friends, and the absolute mess Alex made of the room he inherited from ‘X.’
Our first impression of Alex is as a violent ball of chaos. Over time, we eventually learn that he’s . . . well, he’s still a violent ball of chaos. But with a heart of gold. Although, as far as first interactions go, we can’t think of any other ‘meet cutes’ that involve so many wild animal transformations. Maybe ‘meat cute’ would be a more accurate descriptor.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Of course, first impressions don’t mean much to Alex. She does not, and never will care what you think of her. Your definitions and labels are worthless, but your respect and understanding may win you some brownie points.
Thankfully, Magnus’s life experiences taught him to respect and care about those who are different from him. There was never any question that Magnus would fully accept Alex’s gender fluidity and overall sense of self-determination. Even still, it took time for Alex to properly warm up to Magnus. But can any of us really blame her?

Two Peas in a Pot
Acceptance and understanding are two different things, however. We would be lying if we said that Magnus was never confused about his perception of Alex. But, no matter what, Magnus remained aware of Alex’s feelings (even if he didn’t fully understand them) and stood up for her when others doubted her allegiance.
Eventually, Magnus and Alex bonded during quests to Boston and Jotunheim (both equally great date locations). Magnus took an interest in Alex’s pottery, and in turn, Alex took an interest in . . . well, how easy it is to make fun of Magnus. Throughout all the playful teasing and flirting, Magnus and Alex’s friends noticed there was a mutual attraction between the two einherjar.
For a while, their respective past traumas prevented Magnus and Alex from taking any further steps. But you know what they say: there’s nothing like a life-or-death quest to prevent the coming of Ragnarök to help you get over your fear of commitment.
The Thrill of the Chase
Magnus and Alex finally revealed their true romantic feelings for each other with a kiss while journeying through the most romantic realm of all the 9 Worlds: the frozen wasteland of Niflheim.
Okay, so maybe the setting wasn’t the most swoonworthy, but the sentiments were. Both Alex and Magnus realized that their time together had helped them process the tragedies of their past lives and heal while moving forward.
As far as what that future holds? No one can say what tomorrow will bring for any couple, especially one involving Alex Fierro. These two seemed happy when we the last saw them, even if their relationship status was a bit ambiguous.
It took these two a long time after their first kiss to even admit that it happened. So wherever they decide to go next, the only thing we can expect is for them to go at their own pace.
