We’ve all dreamed of training at Camp Half-Blood, or Hotel Valhalla, or even Camp Jupiter. As demigods, we’re promised a life filled with amazing adventures, extraordinary powers, and fresh strawberries. But every once in a while we’re reminded that this lifestyle doesn’t guarantee a happy ending. Keep these poor lost souls in mind next time you’re trying out new cosplay.
Luke Castellan
Luke, a demigod turned bad, was a headache for Percy Jackson and his friends. This son of Hermes was swayed by Kronos’s dark power, and stole Zeus’s master bolt in hopes of starting a war among the Greek gods. With the help of Annabeth, Luke came to his senses and sacrificed himself to defeat Kronos. This proved he was the true Hero of the Great Prophecy all along. Years later we’re still reeling from that twist.
Bianca di Angelo
Bianca invited trouble when she swiped a Mythomagic figure of Hades from the Junkyard of the Gods. Turns out, Hephaestus doesn’t like anyone stealing his stuff. His robot Talos activated and Bianca crawled inside to stop it from killing her friends, meeting her end in the process. The worst part? That Mythomagic statue was for her brother Nico, to complete his collection. A supportive sister until the very end.
Charles Beckendorf
Charles Beckendorf, son of Hephaestus, will be remembered as one of Percy Jackson’s most trusted allies. His defining moments were undoubtedly during the raid he planned on Kronos’s ship: the Princess Andromeda. After Percy escaped the vessel, Beckendorf set off the bombs he’d planted on the Princess, temporarily steering it off course. Charlie’s bravery earned him a permanent place in Elysium.
If only we could be as generous about his girlfriend, Silena . . .
Silena Beauregard
A daughter of Aphrodite, Silena was the only girl to snag Half-Blood’s most eligible hunk, Beckendorf. They seemed to epitomize “relationship goals” until we learned that Silena was Kronos’s spy. Trapped by threat of blackmail, Silena returned to the good side after learning of Beckendorf’s sacrifice. Then she also perished during the final battle of Manhattan. Posthumously forgiven for her actions, she reunited with Charlie in Elysium, where they reign as cutest demigod couple for all eternity.
Zoë Nightshade
It’s not just demigods who meet their untimely end. Nymph Zoë Nightshade, in league with the Hunters of Artemis, teamed up with Percy to rescue Artemis from Zoë’s own father, Atlas. But Zoë succumbed to a bite by Ladon and his venomous dragon fangs. Artemis was saved nonetheless, thanks to Zoe’s efforts. The nymph finally received her due by becoming a constellation named the Huntress.
While these heroes may be gone, we can take solace in the fact that their sprits live on. Literally. The ghosts of these guys show up all the time. Just ask Nico.
