Ever wondered what the Egyptian gods were up to while the Greek gods hogged all the spotlight in Percy Jackson and the Olympians? If so, then clearly you’ve missed out on Rick’s Kane Chronicles trilogy. Not to worry, we’re here to tell you what you need to know as you join the Read Riordan Book Club and launch into the first installment, The Red Pyramid.
Paging Dr. Kane
Egyptologist Julius Kane has devoted his life to uncovering ancient spells and artifacts. But his interest is more than academic—he also moonlights as a magician for the House of Life, a collective dedicated to keeping gods, demons, and monsters from messing with the human world.
Carter and Sadie, Perfect Strangers
Julius’s wife, Ruby, once foresaw the destruction of Ma’at (the binding energy of the universe, no big deal), which prompted the two of them to dedicate their lives to preventing such a fate. Ruby ended up sacrificing herself for the mission, and Julius was thrust into a custody battle for their young kids, Carter and Sadie. Julius hung on to Carter, but Sadie was sent to live with her grandparents.
Family Reunion
Years down the line, Julius calls upon the powerful god Osiris for help, despite his brother Amos’s warnings against doing so. It happens on the day when Julius takes Carter and Sadie to visit the British Museum to see the Rosetta Stone. Predictably, things don’t go quite as planned.
You Break It, You Buy It
One thing leads to another, and Julius accidentally releases the God of Chaos, Set, and his partners: Nephthys, Isis, and Horus. The evil god entraps Julius and sets out to construct a pyramid in Phoenix, Arizona, that will increase his power. Suddenly, it’s up to the reserved and calculating Carter and the reckless and headstrong Sadie to save the world. Good thing they aren’t alone.
With a Little Help from their Friends
Accompanying the Kanes on their globetrotting trip are the mysterious and powerful Uncle Amos; the cat goddess, Bast; young magician Zia Rashid; and even a smart-talking baboon named Khufu. The Kanes must learn to work together as a team as they discover the secrets of the House of Life and their own magical capabilities, including a personal connection with the gods they never knew existed.
What’s that? You couldn’t wait to know more and already picked up a copy? Great! Let us know when you’re done and meet up back here for The Throne of Fire!
