Saving the world isn’t as straightforward as jumping from point A to B, especially when you’re dealing with Diné Holy People who test you to make sure you’re up for the challenge. It’s going to require more than study guides and calisthenics for our hero, Nizhoni, to rescue her father—and the planet—from an evil monster of a businessman.
All Aboard
World-saving quests can be a challenge for those who can’t drive and are running for their lives. Thank goodness for Amtrak . . . and mysterious fellow passengers who distract the conductor at just the right moment. Nizhoni better stay alert, though. Trains out of New Mexico have been known to take detours up mountains in the middle of the night.
Time Out for Side Trips
Dinétah, home of the Diné, is protected by four sacred mountains, each of which has its own guardian. If even one of those guardians goes missing . . . well, the entire world gets thrown out of whack. So if Jet Black Girl, guardian of the Mountain of the Folding Darkness, has ghosted, it’s worth trying to track her down. Has anyone checked Starbucks?
Always Bring a Hostess Gift
Whatever the quest, it’s almost certain that Na’ashjéii Asdzáá, aka Spider Woman, has the map needed to reach the destination. In exchange, she’ll require an offering that demonstrates a personal sacrifice of some kind. We’re afraid an Amazon gift card won’t cut it.
The Rainbow Road
There won’t be a pot o’ gold at the end. Instead, it will lead to the House of the Sun, monsterlaying weapons reside with a charming fellow named the Merciless One. We’re not sure we want to know how he got that nickname. One thing we do know: getting there will be more difficult than reaching the Rainbow Road in Mario Kart.
Give Rock Crystal Boy a Foot Massage
You know, maybe these quests are getting a little out of hand . . . And speaking of extremities, Nizhoni should watch out for those sharp points on his pinky toes.
