We hope you’ve gotten a chance to catch at least one of The Trials of Uncle Rick. As the events come to a close, we thought we’d do a brief recap of some of the knowledge Rick dropped on us over the past week.
Rick played Dungeons & Dragons.
“I was a [D&D] Dungeon Master and I’d have to make up stories for the players and I would learn a lot from that, like how to pace the narrative for instance. […] And I guess I killed my fair share of player characters. And yeah it’s still something I’ve been known to do in my books.”
His characters were inspired by Real People.
“I was writing this for my son who was a student at the school I taught at […] so I was basing the characters in the book off of people in the school […] like Nico and Mrs. Dodds.”
Troglodytes are a new favorite.
“I still am finding stuff that I’ve never written about. The troglodytes are probably one of my favorite new species that come from mythology.”
He let us say good-bye!
“I was hoping to at least give the readers one more farewell cameo from everybody [in The Tower of Nero]. So even though they might not know the whole story, they get a sense of what each of them is up to and kind of where they seem to be going with their lives.”
A one-off novel is next?
“I like the idea of the freedom of doing a one-off novel. […] There’re characters that you wanna go in and visit […] I’m looking forward to it.”
