The sibling connection is of course a powerful one, especially when you’re bound by godly parents. So we thought we’d take a closer look at some of our favorites, starting with Poseidon’s offspring: everyone’s favorite cyclops, Tyson, and the demigod himself, Percy Jackson.
What An Origin Story
As we learned in The Sea of Monsters, poor Tyson got his start on the streets of New York City, living homeless, fending off monster attacks, and sharing some early hard luck with another favorite hero of ours, Magnus Chase. Thanks to Meriwether College Prep and Percy taking an interest, things got better for him. And he certainly showed his gratitude to his half-brother in helpful ways.
Those Flaming Dodgeballs
We don’t know about you, but we think dodgeball was invented by monsters. The only way it could be more harrowing would be if the game were peopled with literal monsters. (Should that be monstered?) And when the monsters are fireball flinging Laistrygonian Giants, our hero Percy is lucky to have fire-immune Tyson taking the hit for him.
Tyson Taken For Granted
We’re sorry, but Tyson goes through a lot. Like A LOT. And as great as Percy is, couldn’t he maybe have shown some more brotherly love here and there? And we know brothers can be annoying. In fact our brothers were all wedgies and wet willies, so we get it. But we also didn’t protect our brothers from hydras when they were trying to ditch us for some alone time with their girlfriends.
All is Mended
As we know, Tyson gets his hero’s due after returning the Golden Fleece to Camp Half-Blood. Percy dedicates his chariot race win to him and sees him off for his internship with Poseidon at the Underwater Forges of the Cyclopes. Surely his absence left a lovable lug-shaped hole in Percy’s heart. Thankfully their relationship would last for many bear hugs to come.
About Those Bear Hugs
Generally speaking, a welcome bear hug can be a wonderful thing, but we like to think a bear hug from Tyson to Percy is some next-level brotherly cuddling. Although a cracked rib is no joke, Tyson. Be careful with old Seaweed Brain, will ya?
