We still have one more character from Graci Kim’s debut to introduce! If you read last week’s post about Korean cuisine, you may have wondered about Emmett’s cookie skills. Read on to find out more!
Magic spells and superpowers aren’t what make witches so extraordinary. Well, okay, maybe they are . . . but the true source of a witch’s power is their strong relationships with friends and family. Every aspiring witch needs that one friend who will stand by their side every step of the way and isn’t afraid to tell them when they’re being a complete, gigantic moron. For Riley and Hattie Oh, that person is Emmett Harrison.
A Singular Wardrobe
The first thing you may notice about Emmett is that he always dresses in black. (Kind of reminds us of another moody and sullen teenage boy we all know.) You’ve got to give Emmett a break, though. He’s had a hard life. For example, he also wears a silver ring that contains some of his late mother’s ashes. And speaking of said mother . . .
Gifted No More
Emmett is half-saram, half-gifted. His mother used to be the Gom elder in the gifted community before she was killed by members of the exiled Horangi clan. Since then, Emmett’s saram father has understandably removed Emmett from the community. So, you know, don’t tell Dad that Emmett’s planning on helping Riley become a Gom witch herself. The boy would be so grounded.
A Young Man of Many Talents
Even though he’s not a member of the Tokki clan, witches famous for infusing food with delicious magic, Emmett is supremely skilled at baking cookies. Particularly the salted caramel ones. In fact, he’s rarely seen without a Tupperware container holding his latest creations. Rumor has it that’s half of the reason the Oh sisters keep him around.
Along for the Ride
The other half of the reason is, of course, that he supplies the voice of reason whenever the Oh sisters plan something extraordinarily stupid. Like going behind their parents’ backs to find a spell that would grant Riley the powers of a Gom witch. You’ve got to wonder why in this case Emmett didn’t just stay home and play more Battle Galactic.
Then again, sometimes you just want to hang out with people so you can play with their dog. Mong, the Oh family’s fluffy Samoyed, is irresistible, despite all the white fur that really shows on black clothes.
