Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Last Fallen Star!
Every hero needs a trusted magical talking animal sidekick to keep them on the right path. In Riley Oh’s case, she can count on the Haetae to provide valuable advice, words of encouragement, and hints about her true destiny.
That is, whenever he decides to show up. Maybe now that Riley has discovered that she’s the embodiment of the Last Fallen Star, the Haetae will be less cryptic and provide the support she needs to embark on her new quest.
Unless, of course, Riley isn’t the only all-powerful teenager the Haetae has to worry about.
One-Sided Relationship
The Haetae is a lot like that one friend who says “I might come to your party” but won’t give you a definitive answer until the day of. Even worse, he might show up at your house before the party, when you’re not even home, and leave a secret happy birthday note. At the very least, you can always count on the Haetea to give a quality gift. Although you may not find out what the purpose of it is until your life is on the line. . . .
Doesn’t Play Well with Others
For someone who gives such sage advice, the Haetae never seems to follow his own words of wisdom. Sure, he can guide Riley down the road to becoming a hero, but he certainly isn’t going to walk beside her. And if she expects him to reveal her true destiny, she’s going to have to wait a looong time.
“But she needs to figure it out on her own in order to grow!” you say. Yeah, yeah, we’ve heard that before. But if you ask us, the Haetae is more chicken than lion.
Increased Competition
Perhaps the real reason the Haetae is so hard to get ahold of is that he’s busy guiding someone else on their quest of personal discovery. And here Riley thought that her status as the Last Fallen Star made her completely unique and special! It seems this two-timing lion has his hands (paws?) full with another prophesized hero.
Well, two can play at that game. There are plenty of adorable creatures in the Spiritrealm that Riley can bond with instead. The ones that don’t want to eat her face, we mean.
Oh My Mago
Though Riley may not always understand the actions or motivations of the Haetae, she can at least be confident in the knowledge that he always has her best interests at heart. And he’s willing to do anything to prepare Riley for what’s coming next. Because once Riley puts the pieces together, neither she, nor her family, nor the entire witch community will ever be the same again.
And what kind of spirit guide would he be if he spoiled the entire plot right at the start of the hero’s quest?
